Pharmac has announced that Ferrograd tablets (long‑acting ferrous sulfate 325 mg / 105 mg elemental iron) is being discontinued.
Current supplies are expected to run out in September 2025. No new patients will be started on Ferrograd after September 1 2025.
It will be delisted from the Pharmaceutical Schedule on 1 March 2026.
Ferrograd will not be available at some point in September 2025. If you’re on Ferrograd, please talk to your prescriber soon to discuss switching to an alternative, so you can avoid any delays due to supply issues.
Pharmac’s clinical advisors have recommended that if ferrous sulfate is discontinued, ferrous fumarate (Ferro-tab) would be an appropriate alternative. The supplier of Ferro-tab has stated there is enough supply to support those who need iron tablets.
The original supplier of Ferrograd tablets transferred production to a new manufacturer, who proposed a significant price increase. Pharmac sought alternative suppliers at acceptable price but was not successful.
