FAQ: Empagliflozin
What is empagliflozin?
Empagliflozin is a prescription medicine used to help manage type 2 diabetes and heart failure.
How does empagliflozin work?
To treat type 2 diabetes empagliflozin lowers your blood glucose. It does this by helping your kidneys get rid of glucose when you pass urine. It is best used together with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Empagliflozin is also used to treat heart failure. It reduces the symptoms of heart failure such as breathlessness, tiredness and swelling in your lower legs. It helps to remove excess fluid and salt when you pee. Empagliflozin lowers your chances of hospital admission for heart failure.
What benefits can empagliflozin have?
Empagliflozin can have the following benefits:
- Improve blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes,
- Reduce the risk of hospitalisation for heart failure,
- Slow the progression of chronic kidney disease.
What are the possible side effects of empagliflozin?
Common side effects include:
- Increased urination
- Thirst and dehydration (especially if not drinking enough fluids)
- Signs of thrush or urinary tract infection (UTI) such as irritation or itching, pain, swelling or redness in your genital area, or pain or burning feeling when you pee.
Rare but serious side effects include diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), particularly if you’re unwell, not eating, or reducing insulin doses.
