FAQ: Venlafaxine

Venlafaxine is a prescription antidepressant used to treat depression, anxiety disorders, and panic attacks. It belongs to a class of medications called SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors), which help balance certain brain chemicals linked to mood and anxiety.

In New Zealand, venlafaxine is available as capsules of 37.5 mg, 75 mg and 150 mg strengths.

It can take 1 to 2 weeks to start feeling the effects of venlafaxine, but it may take 4 to 6 weeks to feel the full benefit. It’s important to take it every day as prescribed, even if you feel it is not helping your symptoms.

Venlafaxine helps to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and ease symptoms like low energy or loss of interest in daily life. As it starts working, you may feel more emotionally balanced or relaxed about things that used to worry you. Venlafaxine will not change your personality.

Venlafaxine is not addictive in the way drugs of abuse are, but suddenly stopping it can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, flu-like feelings, or mood changes. That’s why it’s important to follow your doctor’s guidance when starting or stopping the medicine.

Some people may feel mild side effects when starting, such as nausea or restlessness, which often improve over time. Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dry mouth
  • Sweating
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Increased blood pressure (at higher doses)

Serious side effects are rare but may include mood changes, suicidal thoughts, or serotonin syndrome. Always report any unusual symptoms to your doctor.
