Key Facts: The life-changing consequences of falls

Approximately one-third of people aged over 65 years old fall each year.1 These falls can have serious consequences.

Falls account for 74 percent of trauma admissions in older people, and 85% of traumatic brain injuries in older trauma patients. 2,3

For those people that suffer hip fractures, half will need ongoing support with daily living and mobility. 4

The ANZHFR reported that 21% returned to their pre-fracture level of mobility and showed 10% of those who fractured their hip died within 120 days post-surgery.5

Why do a Falls Risk Medicines Review?

As we age, the risk of falling increases and medicines can play a role. Certain medicines may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or unsteadiness, which can raise the chance of a fall.

In New Zealand for 2024 there were over 800k new ACC claims relating to fall-related injuries – 30% of these were in the 60+ age group.

A medicines review can give you personalised insights and a simple plan to help reduce your risk, so you can stay steadier, safer, and more confident.
