FAQ: Dapagliflozin
What is dapagliflozin?
Dapagliflozin is a prescription medicine used to help manage type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. It belongs to a class of medicines called sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.
How does dapagliflozin work?
Dapagliflozin works by helping your kidneys remove excess glucose (sugar) through urine. This lowers blood sugar levels and may also reduce blood pressure, body weight, and the risk of heart and kidney complications.
What is dapagliflozin used for?
Dapagliflozin is used together with proper diet and exercise to treat type 2 diabetes.
How long does dapagliflozin take to work?
Blood sugar-lowering effects may be at it’s full effect in about a week or two. Benefits for heart and kidney health are typically seen over a longer period with continued use.
Can dapagliflozin be used for type 1 diabetes?
Dapagliflozin is not approved for use in type 1 diabetes due to an increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). It is only recommended for type 2 diabetes or for patients with heart or kidney conditions, as prescribed.
Should I stop taking dapagliflozin if I feel better?
No. Dapagliflozin helps manage long-term conditions and should be taken regularly to maintain its benefits. Only stop or adjust your dose on your doctor’s advice.
